Knæk – Book cover, Gyldendal
Mikael Josephsen’s Knæk (“Break”) is a collection of prose poems. The protagonist is a patient at a psychiatric hospital, diagnosed with multiple psychiatric disorders, obsessed with jealousy, and drinking heavily. It’s December 2014.
One could be tempted to do the cover for a book titled “Break” with letters or words that were themselves broken, but that would probably be too obvious and literal, and therefore quickly boring. Here the title is written “KN / ÆK” which does include a break, but a subtle one, hopefully not the first thing one notices. The division makes the word – already unusual with its 75% consonants – almost abstract, a small poetic riddle to be solved, revealing, after a moment of biologic computation, a word that makes sense, and an explanation for the way it’s written.
