Dan Turèll’s All Time Greatest Hits and Storby-trilogien – Book covers, Gyldendal
Almost every one of the many books Dan Turèll published during his lifetime had a cover done by the illustrator and painter Peder Bundgaard, his life-long friend and collaborator. These covers are instantly recognizable – hand drawn, colourful, unpretentious, often funny, obviously inspired by film posters, comics, pulps. They are almost all great, some of them real masterworks of the genre.
For these reissued Dan Turèll classics All Time Greatest Hits and Storby-trilogien*, I tried to keep the colourful and unpretentious that fits Turèll so well, without attempting to emulate Peder Bundgaard’s style – which would be both a mistake and difficult to do. These versions are inspired not by detective novels or comics, but by 50’s jazz covers, another mass-market art form with its own kind of poetry and cool. Both covers are made with letterforms only, masking rasterised photos of the author, with overlays of bright colour.
Published by Gyldendal, March 19, 2016, the day Dan Turèll would have turned 70. Edited by Mette Mortensen. Thanks to Peder Bundgaard, Asger Schnack, and Chili Turèll for their kindness and help.
* Storby-trilogien is the collected poems from Drive-in Digte, 3-D Digte, and Storby-Blues, originally published in 1976-77. All Time Greatest Hits is a selection of texts from Turèll’s close to 90 published books, from the earliest privately published loose sheets, through Karma Cowboy and Sekvens af Manjana, to the condensed poems of the final years. Selected by and with an afterword by Asger Schnack.
